For the first time in MLB history, all four of the divisional series went to the maximum five games. This made for an incredibly thrilling week of baseball, as the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics were quickly marched to the edge of the plank after losing the first two games of their best-of-five affairs. Both teams were able to stave off elimination for two consecutive games, and the Giants were able to close the deal in Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon, advancing to the NLCS. The A’s weren’t as lucky in their Game 5 against Detroit in Oakland. The A’s faced buzzsaw pitcher Justin Verlander, who shut them out over the course of an impressive complete game.
The Giants will host the St. Louis Cardinals at AT&T Park in the upcoming days, and once again the Cardinals were one strike away from elimination in their Game 5 against the Washington Nationals. After the Nats strangely opted to bench their best pitcher in order to save him for a hypothetical postseason years down the road, they had an epic Game 5 9th inning meltdown that will essentially define their franchise until they are able to best their success of this year. The ALCS will feature the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees, two teams with rosters full of players with ample postseason experience. The Yanks were able to dispatch of the pesky Orioles by way of a stellar Game 5 performance from ace C.C. Sabathia, but the story of the week was the benching of Alex Rodriguez, one of the game’s highest paid and most accomplished players. Rodriguez has historically struggled in the postseason, but the Yankees will need his bat to produce if they are going to beat the Detroit Tigers, who appear intent on claiming what they feel is rightfully theirs.
